Finding a highlighter that suits your needs can be hard, some contain chunky glitter and others are so natural you barely notice they are there. What option is best, and what needs are required from a highlighter? There are some factors you need to consider before choosing the right product for you. Do you wear foundation or CC/BB cream, do you not wear foundation at all, do you have oily skin or more dry skin? These are some things you need to consider before choosing the type of highlighter. If your schedule is busy and you want a quick applying highlighter you probably want to consider a stick form so that you can swipe it on and dab it out with your fingers to blend in. If you love to wear a full coverage foundation you probably want a highlight that is in powder form so that you're not disturbing the products underneath while applying. If you enjoy a light coverage CC/BB cream that doesn't require setting powder or a minimal quick dusting of powder you may enjoy a gel textured highlight.

Cream highlighter

Benefits: Great versatility - can be built up from a sheer to full coverage highlight by layering, depending on brand/ingredients it can be very hydrating, great option for mature skin because it does not accentuate fine lines or wrinkles due to the creamy consistency.

Cons: Can pick up foundation placed underneath, depending on ingredients if it contains a lot of oils it can create an oily appearance if worn for a long time/in hot weather.

Example: Au Naturale creme hilghlighting sticks

Powder highlighter

Benefits: You can control how much or how little product you want/need, works well to accentuate a eye look because you can use a small brush to apply on top of shadows without disturbing the colours already placed down, is available in many textures from finely milled to glitter/shimmer shades.

Cons: If you have bigger pores it can accentuate them and make them look larger, if you have dry skin it can stick onto textured skin.

Example: Lily Lolo cheek duo is Coralista

Gel highlighter Benefits: Can be used on all skin types, offers a more intense highlight.

Cons: Can dry fast so you have to work quickly, depending on wetness it can pick up whatever is applied underneath.

Example: Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer

9 grams - Metal canister that twists up - $35 USD

Vegan - Cruelty free - Gluten free - Nano particle free

This highlighter is a solid cream.

Pros: Available in 10 shades to suit every skin tone, contains jojoba oil which has antioxidants and moisturizing properties - jojoba oil also has antibacterial properties as well which is great for anyone who has acne prone skin, formulated with the best ingredients including organic and eco cert.

Cons: This product has a harder consistency, if you swipe the product right on top of foundation it's likely to remove anything that you have put on your face prior. (I find it best to add some product to the back of your hand and let it warm then use a brush or your fingers to apply).
